"Things Happen for a Reason"

The beauty of life has so many faces, which enhance imagination and the desire to create. In 2004, something broke: light became shadow, and movement ceased when she lost everything—function in her right hand and both legs due to spinal cord damage….and her job. All gone suddenly.

In the winter of 2005, Inja underwent emergency neurosurgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center for an Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF), which left her with an irreversible spinal cord injury and severe, constant myelopathy. Though the surgery was successful far beyond expectations and she regained the ability to walk, which was only hoped for, she has permanent neuropathic pain and severe spasticity around her shoulders and neck as well as the complete loss of sensation on the entire left side of her body. She was left unable to perform the duties of her computer graphic design career. After intense and lengthy physical and occupational therapy, She has finally accepted the realities of being partially disabled.

As a person with high spirit and very positive views about life, she has decided to paint again to reflect her feelings of fear, gratitude, and hope. She fears that she could lose body functions again. She feels enormously grateful for the recovery despite the pain. And fortunately, hope is a natural gift in order to survive, which she's been given in abundance. She is now painting using richly varied techniques and exploring many patterns, textures and wonderful colors. This is a reflection of how her life has been so far and how she hopes it will continue to be.
